The man of dreams in every girls life, my beloved Daddy!
Born the fourth of five children; he learned early on the importance of hard work and the love of a close knit family.
As a young boy, he had a number of interests. Like most children, he enjoyed playing and making up games. A favorite game was "kick the can". He was curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. Brother, Leo taught him how to fish, hunt and drive a car. Sister, Wilma was his sidekick. He and Wilma spent their young years during the depression pulling a red wagon around collecting "treasures" and gathering fruits and vegetables from the market that had been discarded. Daddy recalls the wonderful look on his blind mothers face when they would arrive home with food to feed the family of seven. He would also hoe weeds in a beet field to earn money for the family.
On December 30, 1942, at the age of 18, he enlisted with the United States Navy. Through his hard work, he achieved the rank of Seaman 1st Class on the USS SatterLee (DD 626). He was also a Baker 1st class (which he loved because he could make fudge every night and eat it all!). Daddy saw action at the Normandy Invasion then on to the Mediterranean and South Pacific. He received several awards recognizing him for his service, including two Stars, a Good Conduct medal, and a Victory medal. His fellow soldiers viewed him as a brother in arms and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1946.
Married Coeta Velree (Ragsdale) Pace on Nov 11, 1951, witnessed by Charles & Eltana Allen. Mr. Hasselblad, Baptist minister. Inherited two daughters. Later divorced, but remained the best of friends.
Daddy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in January 1964. He lived the rest of his life loving and serving our blessed Redeemer.
Daddy drove 18 wheelers for Safeway Stores for more than 30 years. He taught us respect for those big rigs and what a great bunch of guys most of the drivers are.
Married Norma Jean (Shanks) Riskey on July 30, 1965 at Calvary Baptist Church of Bellflower, California. Dr. H. Frank Collins, Baptist minister. Inherited two sons and one daughter. After 35 years of marriage, Norma passed away on Aug 28, 2000.
When he was 78 Daddy married Virginia Marjorie (Farris) Clark on Aug 29, 2002; she was 77. Virginia passed away in 2006.
Daddy taught us that anyone can be a father but it takes a special person to be a daddy. Given a choice, we couldn't have chosen a better Father or Daddy. "Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers." Proverbs 17:6.
