Irene Ashe, 72, of Baytown passed away Friday, May 27, 2011 in a Lufkin hospital.

Mrs. Ashe was born and raised in Houston. At the age of 20, she graduated from Rice Institute with highest honors. She went on to earn Master's degrees in Elementary Education and Library Science. She had a long, successful career as an elementary school teacher and school librarian.

In her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling, genealogical research, and spending time with her family. She was actively involved with the Baytown Area Quilt Guild, the Double Nickel Club, Plumwood Crime Watch, BARSEA, the Greater Houston Puppetry Guild, the Baytown Genealogical Society, the Goose Creek Chapter of the DAR, and the Houston Storytellers Guild. She also volunteered at Harlem Elementary's Reading Lab.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Harmon Ashe, Jr. and daughter, Martha Ashe.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; son and daughter-in-law; and 4 grandsons.

Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, June 3, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Eureka Cemetery in Eureka, TX.
