Bonds, 86, citizen of Rockdale for more than fifty years, were held at the family home. Burial was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Born in Columbus, he lived in Milam County since a boy of 14. He drove with his father and mother over the Chisholm Trail with herds of cattle. For a long time he was city marshal of Rockdale. Ten years ago he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J. W. Garner, Mrs. Susie Williams and Miss Maude Bonds, Rockdale; a son, B. F. Bonds, Cameron; five brothers, W. A. Bonds, Cameron; M. M. Bonds, Rawlings, Wyo.; Boyd Bonds, San Gabriel; Thomas Bonds, Wilson, and Scott Bonds, Levelland; two sisters, Mrs. Fanny Anthony, Southland, and Mrs. Allie Pruett, Conoly.

John H. Bonds, 86, died at his home here early Thursday evening, October 26, following a sudden stroke of apoplexy suffered earlier in the day.

Funeral services were held from the home Saturday afternoon at three o'clock with Rev. P. T. Ramsey of the Methodist church in charge. He was assisted by Rev. D. E. Sneller of Giddings, a former pastor of Rockdale. A selected choir sang. Interment was made in the family plot at Oak Lawn cemetery.

John H. Bonds son of Capt. A. B. Bonds and Elizabeth Miller Bonds, was born April 16, 1953 [sic] in Colorado County, Texas, near Columbus. When still a very young boy he engaged in farming and stock raising with his father and in the early seventies drove a herd of Texas cattle from Colorado county over the 'Chisholm Trail' to Abilene, Kansas.

Mr. Bonds had been a resident of Milam county since a lad. He was married to Miss Lillian Buchanan Clement, of the Salty community on August 10, 1873. To this union were born four girls and one son. The youngest daughter, Marguerite, died when a child.

In 1892, forty-seven years ago, Mr. Bonds came to Rockdale and had resided continuously in the same house. He engaged in the buying and selling of livestok [sic] and for a time was owner

of a market.

Mr. Bonds was elected city marshal of Rockdale in 1900 and proved to be one of the most popular and just officers ever to have served the city. He held this place for sixteen years.

Mr. Bonds united with the Methodist church early in life and was recognized and esteemed for his high moral standard. He possessed a kindly and affectionate disposition, was an ideal husband and father, and was loyal to his friends.

Due to ill health in declining years, Mr. Bonds had not been actively engaged in business for a number of years. Following the death of his wife in June, 1937, he remarried in the home having as a constant and attentive companion his daughter, Miss Maude Bonds, and other members of his family. He spend the sunset of his life surrounded by memories of a life well spent, and was always happy to have friends and neighbors drop in to chat with him.

Surviving are the following: three daughters, Mrs. J. W. Garner, Mrs. Susie Williams, Miss Maude Bonds, all of Rockdale; a son, B. F. Bonds, of Cameron; five brothers, M. M. Bonds of Wyoming; Thomas and Scott Bonds of Lubock [sic] county, Texas; Boyd Bonds of San Gabriel; W. A. Bonds of Cameron; two sisters, Mrs. Sam Anthony of Lubbock county, Texas, and Mrs. Will Pruett of Thorndale. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Casket attendants were: H. G. Perry, T. B. Ryan, H. H. Coffield, C. R. Isaacs, N. E. Alford, Clyde Franklin, W. C. Marrs, and Ryan Grabein of Cameron.
