Per email from Stephen A Townsend to Linda Farmer Ames (23 Mar 2010), "Samuel King Chadwick was the son of Elias and Jesse Pearcy King Chadwick. Samuel was the father of several children by a Black woman named Amanda Pitts. Since they could not legally marry, Amanda simply adopted his surname. Even though they did not live together, neither ever married another person either, and they maintained their relationship for more than 40 years. Amanda was buried at St. Peter's AME Cemetery as Amanda Chadwick (Find A Grave Memorial# 43112082.)"
