John J. Stang, 88, La Crosse, died Monday, March 14, 2016, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse.

He was born Jan. 2, 1928, in La Crosse to Herman E. and Mary B. (Longstreth) Stang. He was a lifelong resident of La Crosse. He was a 1946 graduate of La Crosse High School, attended University of Kansas where he graduated from business school and received his law degree in 1957.

He married Mary Lou Harting in 1955 in Freelandville, Ind. He established his law practice as an attorney in La Crosse.

Following his high school graduation in 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was discharged as a staff sergeant, entered college and enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. He was commissioned in 1950 and was called to active duty in the Korean War where he was the executive officer of an artillery battery.

He was recalled to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961 and was released as a Major in 1962. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and the Army War College at Carlisle, Pa. At retirement, he was a Colonel.

He was active in Boy Scouts and was a member of the National Eagle Scout Association. He was a La Crosse City Commissioner from 1967 to 1970, La Crosse City Mayor from 1968 to 1970, and the Rush County Attorney from 1958 to 1966. He also served on the Kansas Veterans Commission from 1963 to 1966. He was active in the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars and held many offices on the state and national level before being elected Commander-in-Chief of that organization at their convention in Chicago in 1974.

Survivors include his wife, La Crosse; a daughter, Karen Hanley, and her family, Northbrook, Ill., Christopher Hanley, Patrick Hanley, Bethany Hanley, and James Hanley; a daughter, Sharon Cross and husband, John, and their family, Mission Viejo, Calif., Marie Cross and David Cross; and a daughter, Debra Stang, Shawnee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronald B. Stang; and a son-in-law, Bill Hanley.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse.

Memorials are suggested to Barnard Library, La Crosse in care of the funeral home.
