Ronald L. Knoefel, 48, of Garden City, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, near Abbyville.

He was born Feb. 25, 1963, in Hutchinson, to Robert C. and Louise Potter Knoefel. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1981.

Mr. Knoefel had worked for the Kansas Highway Patrol since working as a technical trooper/public resource officer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. He was an instructor of "Operation Lifesaver" railroad crossing safety; National Safety County "Defensive Driving"; Traffic Occupant Protection Strategies "TOPS"; and Child Passenger Safety Technicians Training. He also taught KHP recruit classes in accident investigations involving trains. Devoted to the teaching of driver's education classes, he taught several diverse topics in driving safety. He enjoyed model trains, guns, sports, fast cars and history, especially history of the U.S. military.

On April 22, 1989, he married Jody R. Thompson in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Stephanie A. Knoefel of Garden City; a son, Ryan C. Knoefel of Garden City; his parents, of Abbyville; a brother, Raymond Knoefel and his wife, Sheila, of Peck; and an uncle, Carl Knoefel of Abbyville.

Funeral was at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City. Graveside services were at Abbyville Cemetery in Abbyville.
