Son of Jesse Jenks (1734-1827) and his first wife, Mary (Smith) Jenks, of Smithfield, RI, and Cheshire, MA.

His paternal grandparents were Dr.John Jenks and Rachel (Lawrence) Jenks, and his great grandfather was William Jencks.

Laban married Prudence White on September 22, 1793, in Cheshire, MA.

He was first at Adams,MA, then relocated to Tioga Co,NY in 1805, members of the Massachusetts syndicate that purchased townships in the region. While there, Laban was a Captain and then a Lt.Colonel in the Militia in Tioga County. They removed to Bloomfield,MI on Nov 10,1821. Laban purchased the NE square in Lot 34, and built the first log cabin west of the River Rouge.

Children: Lucy Jenks Park, Smith Jenks, Orrin Jenks, Patience Jenks, Seth Jenks, Polly Jenks Case, Morris Jenks, Laura Jenks Torrey Botsford, Nathaniel Jenks, Diadama Jenks Thayer, Sophia Jenks Irish, Laban Jenks Jr, Prudence Jenks Herrick, and William Jenks.
