Religious Leader. Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), the fourth largest Protestant denomination in the world. Bishop Patterson began his ministry at the age of 17 and was ordained as a COGIC elder in 1958. In December of 1961, he returned to Memphis to become co-pastor with his father at Holy Temple COGIC in Memphis. In 1975, Patterson left COGIC and founded Temple of Deliverance, the Cathedral of the Bountiful Blessings in Memphis, which has evolved into a 5,000-seat worship center. By 2007, the church had grown to more than 13,000 members. The Church of God in Christ membership now stands at approximately 6.5 million members worldwide.
