Religious Folk Figure. Bishop Charles M. "Sweet Daddy" Grace, founder of the United House of Prayer for All People. Grace came to the U.S. as an immigrant from Cape Verde. After working as a cook for the railroad, he traveled to Egypt and adopted the religion of the United House of Prayer. Coming back to the U.S., he started his first church in Wareham Massachusetts. From Wareham, the church went to New Bedford. Headquarters later switched to Harlem, then Washington, DC. By the time of this evangelist's death in 1960, he had over 250 churches and a following in the millions. The Church still exists today. Grace was known for his flamboyant style: long flowing hair, 6 inch fingernails painted red, white and blue, and for his theatrical sermons. Grace founded the phenomena of shout bands, baptism by firehose, selling plots in heaven, and many other methods to gather his following.
