Murder Victim. James E. Davis served as a City Councilman in New York. Prior to that, he was a member of the NYPD by which he was terminated because his name accidentally appeared on an electorial ballot--and a police officer has to officially resign before running for any office or seat. He tried to explain that his name on that particular ballot was in error, but the NYPD did not reinstate his position. This caused Mr. Davis to file a lawsuit to fight their decision. His position was later reinstated until he decided it was time to resign and run for office. He was shot and killed by political rival Othniel Askew on July 23, 2003.∼City Councilman, and founder of the non profit organization "LOVE YOURSELF" Stop the Violence. Davis was an ex-police officer who in 1983 was falsely arrested and assaulted by two police officers who accused him of stealing a car which was his mothers car. No charges were ever filed against but Davis turned the experience around and joined the NYPD police force in 1991. Othniel Askew was the murderer who was escorted past the city hall metal detectors by the councilman. Askew was a political unknown who had planned to run against Davis in the upcoming Council race.
