During the Depression, Flora, along with several of her siblings, worked odd jobs to help support her family.
During World War II, Flora enlisted in the Navy as a WAVE, rising to the rank of Telegrapher Second Class. She was stationed at Navy Headquarters in Washington D.C. It was there that she met her future husband, Charles Vincent Bliven who was in Basic Training nearby.
After the war, she moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan. Charles and Flora were married August 23, 1947. She was the mother of 4 children: Margaret, Charles Jr, Nancy and Leroy. She was the Grandmother of 6: Marie, David Jr, Michael, Mark, Charles III and Robert (Bo).
In the 1950s, she worked as a telephone operator and in the 1960s and 1970s, she volunteered at a local hospital.
