John Malchi was born in Lansingburg, Rensselaer County, New York on June 25th, 1847. His family moved to the Sandusky area in Erie County, Ohio in 1855 where they took up farming.
According to the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio, John Malchi enlisted as a Private in Company B, 117th Infantry Regiment Ohio on his 16th birthday in 1863. (Note: Veterans records show his age at the time of enlistment as 18 however birth records prove that he was actually 16.) He mustered out on 12 Aug 1863 and transferred to Company B, Ohio 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment. In 1875 he bought 164 acres three miles northeast of Suisun in Solano County, California. He farmed this land until 1892, then purchased acreage to raise stock in Lagoon Valley (Vacaville, CA) while continuing to farm his land outside Suisun. In 1910 he moved his family to an eight acre homestead one mile south of Vacaville where they grew crops.
John married Elizabeth Newton in 1876 and they had a baby girl, Mary A. Malchi (later Mary A. Loraine of San Diego). John's first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1880 and three years later John married Nancy Newton (from Douglas County, OR), his first wife's sister. Together John and Nancy had three children: Grace Evelyn, Edith Helen, and Viola.
At some point John Malchi took up residence in Vallejo (Solano Co.) California and appears in the 1904-'05 Kingsbury's Directory of Vallejo City and Solano County, California. His occupation is given as Farmer.
According to California Biographies of Napa & Solano Counties, John Malchi served as clerk of the board of school trustees in Solano County, CA. He was made a Mason in Carson Lodge No. 1. F. & A. M., state of Nevada, and was a member of Suisun Lodge No. 55. He was also a member of Solano Lodge No. 43, R. A. M., and with his wife and two daughters was a member of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and Gen. Sol. Meredith Post, G. A. R. of Fairfield, California.
