Heinz Herbert (Butch) Chriske, age 86, of East Helena, passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 2, 2006, surrounded by his family at St. Peter's Hospital in Helena.

He was born June 4, 1920, in Helena, the son of Ernest Augustus Chriske and Trese (Steffansky) Chriske. He was the ninth of 11 children. He graduated from Helena High School, and served in World War II with the 346th Infantry Army Combat Team. He was with Company C 607th Tank Destroyer Battalion, and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars; the American Theater Ribbon; Purple Heart; Good Conduct Ribbon and the Bronze Star Medal.

He and his wife, Genevieve Tursich, were married in East Helena on Oct. 2, 1954. Together they owned and operated the Goodie Shop Bakery in Helena for 44 years. She preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 1993.

Mr. Chriske enjoyed gardening and his two cats and a bird.

Survivors include four children: Patty (and Randy) Dahlstrom of Helena; Jim (and Hedy) Chriske of East Helena; Don (and Pam) Chriske of Montana City; and Mary (and Daryl) Tulberg of Helena. Grandchildren include: Chad and Michelle Wilson; Mandi Chriske; Amy (and Shane) Hall, Sam Chriske, Rachel (and Cole) McElravy; Brady Chriske; and David Tulberg; great-grandchildren include: Michaela Wilson; Julia Rowlan; Jazmine McElravy; Jordan Chriske-Hall; Tayla Chriske-Hall;. He is also survived by a brother, Clarence Chriske of Helena; a sister, Louise Miller of Helena, and a brother-in-law, Michael Tursich of Helena.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ernie, Art and Walter (Mike); and two sisters, Olga and Esther.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in East Helena. A vigil will be at 7:30 p.m., Monday, at Retz Funeral Home. Interment will be on Wednesday in St. Ann's Cemetery in East Helena, with military rites.
