Anthony served as a Staff Sergeant on B-24D #42-72896, 514th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He had completed 36 missions prior to his downing.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on October 8, 1942, in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Single, without dependents.
He was the son of George and Emma Battaglia of 8 Third St. Lackawanna, New York.

Anthony was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24 was shot down by enemy fire and crashed in the sea near Italy during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart.
