Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He competed as a member of the United States Olympic boxing team at the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, and won the Gold Medal for the Middleweight Class, defeating Polish boxer Tadeusz Walasek in a close match. He served in the United States Army during the war in Vietnam, rising to command Sergeant Major, and being awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. In his later years, he was a boxing coach at Fort Benning, Georgia.
