He was born April 28, 1925, in Barber to Leroy and Bertha (Howard) Matthews. He grew up and attended the first four years of school in Logan and finished school in Bozeman.
He married Iva Verwolf on Feb. 5, 1943, in Bozeman. He worked for Idaho Pole Co. for 10 years, Montana Flour Mill for 10 years, and then at Dairy Gold for 23 years, retiring in 1986. He loved hunting and horseback riding and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife at home; sons James Matthews of Livingston, Dennis Matthews of Bozeman, LeRoy Matthews and his wife, Linda, of Livingston; and two brothers, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Mason.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Park in Bozeman. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
