OBITUARY
Grover Milton Tillotson, son of Mr and Mrs George Milton Tillotson, was born at Onaga, Kansas, April 22, 1922. He attended grade school in Leavenworth, Marysville, Morland and Onaga, and high school at Onaga and Lawrence. He played the melophone in the school and city bands from the age of 8 until he was 16, and was baptised in the Onaga Baptist Church. He moved to Lawrence with his parents at the age of 16, and attended high school in Lawrence. His Church membership was transferred to the First Baptist Church 3 years ago. He joined the National Guards in April 1939 and was called into active military service
Dec. 23,1940. He served in the 35th Div., 137th Inf. and was in training at Camp Robison, Ark., Ft. Ord, Cal., Montery Cal, Irvine Park, Cal., Long Beach, Cal. Camp Rucker, Ala., Camp Butner, N.C., then overseas for one year taking part in battles in Normandy, St. Lo, and
Metz. He was wounded twice at St. Lo and was captured by the Germans at Metz and in a prison camp 6 months and 3 days before being liberated by our US 9th army on April 15.
Grover said that was the best birthday present he ever had. He arrived in the US on Mother's Day May 8th. He received the Combat Infantryman's Badge. ETO Ribbon,
Purple Heart with 2 Oakleaf Clusters, 3 Battle Stars and Good Conduct ribbon. He received his honorable discharge on July 30, 1945 and returned home, intending to attend KU this fall and take civil engineering. He had a job on the highway and worked 3 days before he was killed in an automobile accident on the Highway near Lawrence on Aug. 18th. Funeral services were conducted in Lawrence at the Rumsey Funeral Home and at the Baptist church in Onaga on Aug. 20th by his pastor, Rev. E. L. Snodgrass of Lawrence.
Burial was in the Onaga cemetery beside his two brothers and one sister who died in infancy. He is survived by his parents, grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many
friends. Grover was then removed from the Onega Cemetery and placed in the Mount Hope Cemetery beside his Mother.
