Born John James Jones, he was known as James Jones for the entirety of his life. Son of John James Jones Sr. , known in Marion County as James Jones. Settled on the Green Camp Pike, about where White Oaks farm was located. Married three times: Abigail Carpenter (three children), Harriett Carpenter Barks - sister of his first wife - (nine children) and Elizabeth Middleton Thompson.

Buried with second wife Harriett, the grave marked by white marble shaft style monument. First wife Abigail is buried at Idleman Cemetery. Third wife Elizabeth Middleton Uncapher Jones is buried in Kansas.

Date on stone incorrect by two days after the date of death.
