Born John James Jones, he was known as James Jones for the entirety of his life. Son of John James Jones Sr. , known in Marion County as James Jones. Settled on the Green Camp Pike, about where White Oaks farm was located. Married three times: Abigail Carpenter (three children), Harriett Carpenter Barks - sister of his first wife - (nine children) and Elizabeth Middleton Thompson.

Buried with second wife Harriett, the grave marked by white marble shaft style monument. First wife Abigail is buried at Idleman Cemetery. Third wife Elizabeth Middleton Uncapher Jones is buried in Kansas.

Note: Marion County Ohio Probate Court, Record of Death states: April 19, 1883. This date of death matches newspaper notices - publication of death appears in the 4/20/1883 Marion Star. Date on stone incorrect by two days after the date of death. If the date on the stone were correct, this would mean that Marion Star would have had to report his death two days before his actual date of death.
