Only son of William Barks and his wife Harriett Carpenter (see Harriett Barks Jones, née Carpenter, Pleasant Cemetery, Marion County Ohio).

William Barks Sr. died less than four months after his marriage to Harriett Barks, and it is believed that he died without either he or his wife knowing that she was pregnant yet with their only child, named William Barks Jr. after his late father.

Harriett raised William in the home of her father in law, proprietor of the Blue Ball Tavern which stood where the Fahey Bank (Marion Waldo Road) branch now stands. In 1837, following the death of her sister Abigail Jones after childbirth, Harriett married her widowed brother in law James Jones. William Barks was raised as James' son, however, because William was heir to property that his father owned in Marion Township, he was not legally adopted.

William Barks died of typhoid fever at the age of 19 on September 19, 1851. He was laid to rest in Barks Cemetery, at the corner of Barks Road and the Delaware Pike (now Marion Waldo Road).

For many years, it was believed that William was laid to rest at Barks Cemetery at the junction of Marion Waldo Road and Barks Road, recent information, however, now leads us to believe that he buried at Pleasant Cemetery.
