Son of George and Grace Fill Steff. Earned education degree from Fredonia State University, and masters degree in horn from Eastman School of Music. Served in the Army in the 1950s, then moved to Memphis, where he was a music arranger at the Pepper-Tanner studios. He played in the horn section for various recording artists. He played on "Suspicious Minds" for Elvis Presley, the theme from "Shaft", and "Dusty in Memphis" by Dusty Springfield. He played backup for Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Rod Stewart. He was a music professor at University of Memphis for 28 years, and played with the Memphis Symphony for 20 years.
