Author and Activist. Jack Herer was a hemp activist and the author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes", a book which has been used in efforts to decriminalize cannabis, hemp, and marijuana. He wrote a second book, "Grass", and there has also been a documentary made of his life called, "The Emperor of Hemp". A former Republican, he was a pro-marijuana and hemp activist. He believed that the cannabis sativa plant should be decriminalized because it has been shown to be a renewable source of fuel, food, medicine, and so many other things. Plus, it can be grown in virtually any part of the world. He also believed that the United States government deliberately hides the proof of this. He devoted his life to the support of cannabis, hemp and marijuana. He ran for United States President twice as a Grassroots Party candidate. First in 1988, receiving 1,949 votes and again in 1992, receiving 3,875 votes. In July 2000, he suffered a minor heart attack and a major stroke. The stroke affected his speaking abilities and the ability to move the right side of his body. He mostly recovered, claiming that treatment with the psychoactive mushroom, amanita muscaria, was the secret to his recovery. On September 12, 2009, he suffered another heart attack, while he was backstage at an event during the Hempstalk Festival in Portland, Oregon. He spent nearly a month in critical condition in a Portland hospital, including several days in a medically induced coma. He passed away on April 15, 2010, at the age of 70, in Eugene, Oregon. A specific strain of cannabis has been named after him in honor of his work. The Jack Herer strain has won several awards, including the 7th High Times Cannabis Cup. He was also introduced to the Counterculture Hall of Fame at the 16th Cannabis Cup in recognition of his first book.
