Mary Curling was the daughter of Josiah & Mary (Duke) Curling. Mary also had Sikes & Biggs ancestors

Mary had 2 brothers & 2 sisters, there names are not known. Her ancestors had lived in NC and VA since at least the early 1700s. The Curling family can be traced back to Nicholas Curling 1621 - 1783 in Kent Co, England and his wife Ann Wild.

Per the family bible on 18 Jan 1808 in NC Mary married Caleb Forbes. Together they had 5 children:

1. William, 1809 NC - 1842 IL, m. Hannah Buckingham, 6 ch 2. Courtney, 1811 NC - 1886 IL, m. Josiah Martin, 7 ch
3. Frances, 1817 NC - abt 1845, m. Jordan Sawyer, 1 ch
4. Peter, 1819 NC - 1860 IL, m. Sarah Buckingham, 9 ch
5. Caleb, 1825 NC - bef Apr 1831 NC

Where they lived in Currituck County, NC was subject to flooding so the family ultimately moved to Illinois when new land opened up for settlement.

In 1830 Caleb & Jesse Sawyer came on horseback looking for a good land to claim. They found the rich high land in Hopewell twp of Marshall County. The 2 men returned to NC and the families prepared to move.

On 2 Sep 1831 after a 5 month wagon trip the Sawyers, Forbes, a few Whites and other NC folks arrived in Hopewell twp. All of Caleb's & Jesse's children made the move to Marshall County.

The move was a good one for the Forbes family. They bought many acres of the fine government farm land, worked hard and quickly prospered.

Mary was almost 83 when she died, a long life for those pioneer times.
