John was the son of William Buckingham. His mother's name is unknown.

Where in England John and his father came from and who the rest of the family was has yet to be finalized. Some think they were from Devon in SW England, others think it was Witney in Oxfordshire which is WNW of London. John and William Buckinghams were common names found in both places.

On 8 Aug 1682 John and his father arrived in America on the Amity.

In 1698 in the Brandywine Baptist Church in Delaware he married Hannah Brunsden.

The couple had 11 children while they lived in Birmingham twp, Chester Co, PA:

1. Hannah, d.1776 m1. John Heath, 1 ch.
- m2. Rev Malachi Bonham
2. Sarah, d. aft 8 1765, m. Daniel Nichols
3. Esther
4. John, d. aft 10 1752, m. Sarah Knowles, 6 ch.
5. Abel
6. William, 1701-1789, m. Jane James, 7 ch.
7. Alice, m. Edward Jones, 1 ch.
8. Margaret, d. 3 1752, never married
9. Mary, d. 3 1753, m. Wm Kirk, 10 ch.
10. James, 1723-1793, m. Mary Chambers, 9 ch.
11. Joseph, 1726-1795, m. Margery Piggott

From the time John arrived in America until at least 1740 he lived in Chester County, PA. Through the years John owned several different parcels of land in Birmingham township. Years after Hannah's death in 1749 he was living in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle Co, DE.

When John contracted the illness that lead to his death his daughter Mary took leave and came to care for him til his death.

For all of his adult life John was very active in the Baptist Church. Most of this was with the Brandywine Baptist Church in Pennsylvania then in Delaware when he moved from Pennsylvania.

It is assumed that John was buried in the Brandywine Baptist Church Cemetery where he was an active member.
