"Nettie" was born in Crawford County, Ohio. The family farm was in Bucyrus Township, but there are no records place her birth there, or in Bucyrus. Newspaper accounts at the time of her death place her birth in Dallas Township. As a young girl, she became an accomplished horsewoman and was know for breaking strong-willed colts. She married James Gregory, who was older than she. His family established one of the first gristmills at Cardington, Ohio. The Monnett's had close ties to friends living in Cardington. A daughter, Edna Monnett Gregory was born to the couple, but she died of Diptheria. Nettie and her husband divorced and reconciled, but the marriage broke apart. Towards the end of her life, she worked as a seamstress. In a letter to her cousin Orra, on file in the Los Angeles Public Library in his genealogy notes, she wrote in January 1926, "Life has turned out well for some of us, and not as I would have wished for myself."

Cause of Death, cancer of the liver. Ohio Death Certificate 1926-21908.

Note: Nettie was the foster mother of Frank G. Smith. We do not know the exact circumstances of how this came to be. It was Nettie's wish that should Frank should be buried in the plot if he so chose. For Frank's memorial, see memorial: 61377058.
