Jimmy Lee Benally served as a PFC in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. He served on the Marshall Islands in 1944 and on Iwo Jima in 1945 in operations against enemy forces.
The son of Capitan and Eloise (Tsosie) Benally, he was the eldest of 10 children and he worked hard to help support the family. Lying about his age, he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17, continuing to help support his family back home. After his military service he settled in Barstow where he met his future wife, Inez. For 40 years he worked two jobs, with the Santa Fe Railroad as a Labor Forman and at Hayward Lumber Yard as a forklift operator. After a brief retirement he returned to work part-time for Valley Lumber. Preceded in death by his wife, Inez, Jimmy was survived by their five children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, as well as one brother, five sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Formerly a resident of Teec Nos Post, Arizona, he was living in Barstow, California at the time of his death. He passed away from natural causes at his home, surrounded by family, at the age of 86.
Visitation and services were held on Saturday, September 24 at Meads Mortuary in Barstow.
Funeral services were held at the Four Corners Christian Reformed Church in Teec Nos Post on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 9 A.M., where he was honored with a 21-gun salute.

On September 26 Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly ordered flags to be flown at half-staff September 27 through September 30 in Mr. Benally's honor.
