BALTIMORE CITY POLICE SERGEANT
SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

Det. Sgt. Grunder was the head of the Baltimore City Escape & Apprehension Unit. He was off duty at the time and driving with his family on Harford Road when he observed a man sitting on the steps of St. Dominick's Roman Catholic Church located @ Harford Rd. & Echodale Ave. that he recognized as a violent convict from the west coast. Knowing how dangerous this man was, he parked his vehicle and his family a good distance away and started to go to a pay phone to call for help. Just at that time a marked patrol unit happened up the street and Sgt. Grunder flagged him down and made him aware of the situation. Both Sgt. Grunder and the uniformed officer began to approach the suspect. As they identified themselves, the suspect stood up, ran 2 steps, turned and in a crouch position fired at the officers striking Sgt. Grunder in the chest. The suspect was shot and killed by the uniformed officer. Sgt. Grunder was transported to Union Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife & 3 children.

HE IS HONORED ON THE NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL WALL PANEL 23E LINE 004.
