SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - A Windsor woman was sentenced to eight years in prison for causing a head-on collision that killed a social worker during an apparent suicide attempt.
Leslie Ann Gomez, 43, was sentenced in Sonoma County Superior Court Thursday after pleading no contest to charges of assault with a deadly weapon and vehicular manslaughter.
The accident occurred May 20, 2005, when Gomez's car slammed head-on into a car driven by Judy Lampee on Shiloh Road in Windsor. Lampee, 60, of Sebastopol, was critically injured and later died.
"I feel all right with the sentencing," said Shawna Lampee, 24, Judy Lampee's daughter. "I forgive her. I have a choice to make: I could choose to hate her or I forgive her."
During a preliminary hearing, police and witnesses testified that Gomez acknowledged purposely driving into oncoming traffic near Shiloh Cemetery. A former boyfriend testified she had previously tried to commit suicide.
Lampee was well-known for her community service. She founded the Paradise Found Christian Concert House in Forestville, co-founded a Windsor halfway house for teenagers, fed the homeless in downtown Santa Rosa and dedicated her life to helping at-risk teenagers.
