Samuel Henry Broad was the youngest child of Isaac and Joanna (Marks) Broad. Born in Towednack, he came to the United States sometime between 1871 and 1878. He settled in Central Mine, Michigan, an enclave of Cornish culture in the midst of Michigan's Copper Country. He was later joined in this town by his sister Jane and her daughter Emily Jane.

On May 24, 1881, Samuel married Elizabeth Hosking in Calumet. The couple had a daughter, Clara, and five sons: Samuel John, Charles Henry, Richard, Alfred, and Harold. A seventh child, daughter Lettie, did not survive long.

After the mine in Central died, Samuel moved south to work in the mines at Hancock, where he was tragically killed in a workplace accident.

Surviving were his wife, children, and siblings Isaac, Elizabeth, Phyllis, Jane, Emily, Joanna, Eliza, and Fanny. In addition to his parents, Samuel may have been preceded in death by a brother, Richard.
