Police Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez, 27, was fatally shot early Monday while investigating reports of gunfire on South Hermitage Avenue shortly after midnight. As he and his partner were questioning several residents a vehicle drove up and an occupant opened fire, striking Officer Valadez once in the leg and once in the head.

He was transported to a Stroger hospital where he succumbed to his wounds later in the day.

He was the first Chicago police officer killed in 2009 in the line of duty.

Valadez was assigned to the busy Englewood District, where he worked the midnight shift. His drive led commanders to assign him to one of the district's incident cars, which means he and his partners monitored so-called "hot-spots" where crime was spiking.

Officer Valadez had served with the Chicago Police Department for three years. Officer Valadez earned a department commendation and 22 honorable mentions.

Supt. Jody Weis, who spent early Monday morning at the hospital and returned later as Officer Valadez was removed from life support, called him a "great officer''.

He is survived by his parents, sister, brother, and girlfriend. His siblings and girlfriend also serve with the Chicago Police Department.

He and his girl friend are expecting a son.

On Sept. 9, 2009, Alex's finacee Chicago Police Officer Christina Rodriguez gave birth to a baby boy, Alejandro Valadez Jr.

In October, the Chicago Police Department retired Valadez's badge. It is the 465th badge in the Honored Star Case.
