: Jeffrey Lee Delbert answered the final alarm on Nov. 17, 2006, the victim of brain cancer caused by years of exposure to carcinogenic toxins from fighting fires. He was just 39 years old. Delbert's death serves as the bench-mark for the continued long-term protections and benefits afforded first responders for their years of selfless heroism and service. The State of Texas enacted the Presumptive Law in 2005. The Jeffery Delbert case is the "Bench Mark" for all fire fighters in Texas.

Date: November 20, 2006. PHALBA - Services for Jeffery Lee Delbert, 39, Phalba, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Word of Victory, Canton, with Dr. Michael J. Burns and Dallas Fire Rescue Chaplain Ray Edwards officiating.

Burial will be in Haven of Memories under direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton.

Mr. Delbert died Nov. 17, 2006, in Gun Barrel City.

He was born April 9, 1967, in Mesquite to Joseph J. and Dorothy Joan Cassells Delbert. He was a lifelong resident of the Canton area and a member of Word of Victory. He worked in the McKinney Fire Department and, for 11 years, worked with the Dallas Fire Department. He was a member of IAFF.

He was preceded in death by mother, Joan Delbert; daughter, Joy-Elise; and brother, Chad Blevins.

Survivors include his wife, Dena Delbert, Phalba; sons, Lee Delbert and Matthew Delbert, both of Phalba; daughter, Makayla Delbert, Phalba; father, Joe Delbert, Canton; brothers, Lynn Delbert, Antlers, Okla., Larry Delbert and Tony Delbert, both of Canton, and Joey Delbert, Plano; sister, Leslie Smith, Kyle; twin sister, Jackie Fitzgerald, Rowlett; nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Joe Delbert, Tim Rose, Steve Tawater, Brian Haas, Dan Skomars, Mike Cekinovich, Bobby Ross, Hoyt Hubbell, Frank Roma, Dwayne "Red" McPeek, Tony Jones and Neil Howard.
