June 28, 2012 at the request of Jerry Williamson, we are including this link to a fellow serviceman who was killed during the same action at Larry Bates:

Army Cpl. Terry Lee Hinkle, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hinkle of 6903 Rossevelt Ave., Franklin, Ohio. Cpl. Hinkle graduated from Lemon Monroe High School in 1966. He was employed by Barkelew Electric Co. from the time of graduation until he entered the service the following January.

Cpl. Hinkle served as a Light Weapons Infantryman with the 2nd Battle Group, 60th Infantry, A Company assigned to the 9th Infantry Division. Cpl. Hinkle had only been in Vietnam for four months when he was killed in action Nov. 24 1968. Cpl. Hinkle was serving as one of three point men with his platoon as it moved into a woodline. As they entered the woodline, the enemy opened fire from concealed bunkers in eight to ten directions. Two soldiers were killed and Cpl. Hinkle was wounded but he began to remove one mortally wounded man to the rear when a burst of fire killed him instantly.

Cpl. Hinkle was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his meritorious service in Vietnam.

In addition to his parents Cpl. Hinkle was survived by: sisters - Shirley Raye Miller and Linda Susan Runnells; brothers - John Larry Hinkle and Michael Alan Hinkle.

Mr. and Mrs. John Hinkle had preferred that he be buried in the Memorial Plot at Woodside Cemetery, in Middletown, Ohio. Where marble crosses stand row upon row in tribute to the city's World War II dead but instead he was buried at the Springboro Cemetery.

Rules set up by a memorial committe nearly 20 years before did not permit it. Burial in the Memorial Plot is reserved for those "who enlisted or were drafted within the area served by the Middletown Post Office." That rule prevented Cpl. Hinkle from being buried there because his parents' address is served by the Franklin Post Office - not Middletown's.

The rules do not allow the fact that Cpl. Hinkle was born at Middletown Hospital and that he lived in Middletown until 1964 when his parents relocated. Even though they were only 100 yards east of the Butler County line his burial was still denied.

A man can serve his country and give his life for freedom but his family does not have the freedom to bury him in a cemetery of their choice.

Cpl. Terry Lee Hinkle's name can be found on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 38W; Line 49
