James was the son of Margaret Auter. On 18 Jul 1900 he married Carrie Bauman and they had eight children: Bertha, James F., Mildred, Margaret, Pauline, a stillborn infant boy, James W. and Catherine. For many years James was involved in the cooperage industry. James died at Pewee Valley Hospital at the age of 86.
