Wilhelm was the son of Ernst Eschmann, a butcher, and Louisa Neufeld. On 04 Aug 1827 he married Frederica Henrietta Greve and they had twelve children: Wilhelm, Ernst, Diederich (Julius), Friederich, Johanna, Carl, Emilie Henrietta, Wilhelmine (Mathilda), Heinrich, Emilie Sophia (Louisa), Julia, and Augusta. About 1849 the family immigrated to the United States where they settled first in Lawrence, Ohio before most of them moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Census records enumerated his occupation in Louisville as being a day laborer. Wilhelm died of dropsy at the age of 70.
