James was the son of James Comley and his first wife, Lula Jones Comley. About 1914 he married Anna T. Smart and they had four children: Margaret, Marcella, James and Joseph. James worked as a switchman for railroads and he was employed as such at L&N Railroad in Louisville at the time of his death. He died of chronic myocarditis.
