The daughter of Irish immigrants Thomas Fahey and Margaret McNamara, Mary Alice Fahey married G. A. Bonter in 1897, but was widowed by the time the 1910 census was taken. The couple was childless. Mame opened a string of bordellos located near the train station in Troy, operating them from about 1906 until they were shut down in the early forties. Noted for her kindness and generosity, she was a beloved local figure. She was also known all over the United States, ranking second only to Samuel "Uncle Sam" Wilson as a noted citizen of Troy, New York. Filmmakers Penny Lane and Annmarie Lanesey have produced a documentary entitled "Sittin' on a Million" that portrays Mame's life. Copies can be ordered at http://mamefaye.com/

After having been left blank for 63 years, Mame's headstone was finally inscribed in 2006.
