He was traveling about 180 MPH on a tuning run when his boat flipped and he was thrown out. He was transported to Alameda Hospital, but died from his injuries about three hours later. He was married and the father of three children and was from Norwalk, California. He was the national champion in 1971 and 1972 while driving his unblown fuel hydro "Crucifier." In 1973 he set the quarter mile record of 202.46 MPH.
