Larry W. Boneck's common sense, good nature and keen sense of humor enriched the lives of those around him during his lifetime as a Vietnam veteran, Washoe County Animal Control officer, husband and father. Larry, 61, passed away with his family at his side Dec. 5, 2010 at Saint Mary's Hospital after complications from a heart attack. He was born June 13, 1949 to Oscar and Mary Boneck near Susanville, Calif. and attended Wooster High School in Reno, Nev. A Purple Heart was awarded to Larry, while fighting in the Vietnam War with the 9th Infantry Division in the United States Army. Vietnam war buddy and author of "Enter and Die," James Milliken described Larry as the best man to walk point saying he exuded confidence with an undeniable resolve and "an uncanny ability to sense danger and make appropriate steps to ward off enemy contact." Larry loved his 30-year career as a Washoe County Animal Control officer, looking out for the best interests of the Northern Nevadans he served and their animals. His skill and excellent judgment prompted his promotion to senior officer and range master, and caused other Nevada agencies to seek his training. His gruff exterior and quick wit often hid strong insight into people and animals. Coworker D.D. Monroe said of Larry, "The devilish side often tarnished the halo, but nary a soul can deny the true caliber of this man who have felt the warmth of his true and kind heart's glow." Private services were held Thursday, Dec. 10 at Sierra Memorial Gardens Cemetery. All who knew him should honor his memory by following his advice to "Cowboy up!" He is survived by his wife, Janet Boneck; children Rae Bauman, Dan Gregory, Michelle Gregory, Lisa Boneck, Steven R. Larsen; and grandchildren Amanda, Kelly Kay, Taylor, Sidney, Tenzing, Karma, Lawrence Brandon and Rebekah.
