John was serving on HMS Laurentic when she hit two mines off the coast of Donegal. The ship was carrying military and gold bullion to America and Canada for munitions during WW1. The ship sank within an hour and most of those who perished was due to the freezing conditions in the sea and lifeboats.
He left a wife Catherine and four children, John, Margaret, Mary and Catherine.
