Box 254, Haskell and Simpson, was the location of a significant fire on the morning of June 24, 1902. This event proved to be one of the most serious residential fires in the history of Dallas. Before the fire was extinguished, 25 houses were damaged or destroyed and a fireman had died in the line of duty. Fifteen other firemen were overcome while battling the blaze but managed to survive. Fireman John Clark, who had been manning a line with three other firemen, collapsed and died on the scene. Efforts to revive him were futile. This was the Department's first line of duty death.

The Firefighter Monument located at the Drill Tower on Dolphin Road was created in his honor. The firefighter on top of the monument was fashioned in his image.
