Was Attending to His Duties Near Pennsylvania Avenue and Hurst Street This Afternoon

J. A. Covington, Assistant Superintendent of the Dallas fire alarm system, was shocked to death by an electric wire this afternoon at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Hurst street about 3:20 o'clock.
News of the accident was immediately sent to the Central Fire Station and Chief Magee of the fire department and Henry Garrett, in charge of the fire alarm system, immediately went to the scene of the accident.
From what could be learned this afternoon, Covington was at work on a forty-foot pole , when he came in contact with a live wire. Several people saw the accident and it was stated that he hung suspended for half a minute in mid-air before falling to the ground below. Those who saw the accident are satisfied that he was dead, however, before his body struck the ground.
Covington was well known in Dallas and had been connected with the city electrician's department for many years. He was a Virginian by birth, but had resided in Texas many years. Mr. Covington was a widower, but is survived by two children, one a fifteen-year-old girl and the other a boy who is employed the Postal Telegraph company.
The deceased was known by his close friends as "Cap" Covington and was well and favorably known by all members of the fire department and other city officials. He was liked by those that knew him and his many friends will be sorry to learn of the sad accident.

John was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina to Joseph A Covington (1832-1863) and Nancy Jane Pankey (1831-1898). His father died 18 Dec 1863 from a battle wound at the Confederate Army Hospital, Orange Court House, Virginia.
John married Ruth Perkins Dean 5 Dec 1888 in Irisburg, Henry County, Virginia. They had two children Nellie Grace (1889-1983) and Joseph Allen Covington (1891-1960).
Ruth died in 1894 leaving John with 2 young children. In 1900 the children are in the care of his sister-in-law Elizabeth (Bettie) Hopper and living in Irisburg. John is in or near Dallas working as a City Electrician, city alarm installer that was tied to the fire department. On 16 September 1908 John was electrocuted and fell 35 feet to his death.
His young son was living with him in 1908 and accompanied his body back for burial in Lone Oak, Henry County, Virginia. Lone Oak is not a town just a very small community, perhaps a rail stop back then. His son married a Edith Mae Clayton but so far no descendants have been found. John's obituary says he was buried in a family cemetery but have been unable to locate this. Lone Oak is in Henry County, Virginia. Have found both a Covington Cemetery and a Pankey (renamed Rank Isley Cemetery) in Henry County, either could be the family cemetery referred to in the obituary. Pankey was his mother's maiden name. Comments I got from Find a Grave researchers who physically checked out both include that the Covington Cemetery is in a forest and it is possible some headstones were covered with leaves and on Pankey (Rank Isley) "Well, I did visit the cemetery. Very sad situation....very overrun and many, many, many unmarked slate stones."
His daughter Nellie Grace Covington married Richard A. Arrington. In 1910 they were living in Danville, Virginia. They had 3 sons, Richard Adler Arrington Jr. (1911-1977, buried in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina), Dillard Arrington (1915-1974) and Lee Christopher (1919-1970).
