HUBBARD - Willis W. Hubbard, 94, 1804 Birchwood Lane, died Monday, June 2, 1986 in his residence. Born July 27, 1891, in Wellington, Kan., son of Thomas Benson and Kate Isabel Hubbard. Graduated from Beloit and Kansas schools and attended Kansas State University 1910-1911. Moving to Chicago in 1912, he entered the office of D. H. Burnham, architect. Attended University of Illinois in 1914 and graduated with honors in class of 1916. Passed state examination for architects that year. Entered first Officers Training Camp at Fort Sheridan in 1917. Commissioned 1st lieutenant in Field Artillery and assigned to 17th F.A. 2nd Division and immediately left for France in 1917. Saw action with 2nd Division at Chateau Thierry, Belleau Wood, Soissons andd St. Mihiel. Wounded at St. Mihiel and sent back to base hospital at Limoges. Promoted to captain in August. In late December, returned to his regiment which was then on Rhine at Bendorf, Germany. While serving with 2nd Division, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Purple Heart and French Croix de Guerre with Star. Returning home on hospital ship in late May 1919, he was sent to Fort Sheridan, where he appeared before a retirement board and there was retired as captain, U.S.A. Married the former Katharine Nelson Jan. 15, 1921, and they lived in Chicago, where he was with Graham, Anderson, Probst and White, architects. In May 1922, he moved to Rockford. Hubbard was recalled to active duty in World War II, serving three and a half years with the Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes Division. Returning to Rockford in 1946 to resume his architectural practice. Mrs. Hubbard died May 23, 1981. Hubbard's architectural work began in Rockford in 1928, including design of Gas & Electric Building, old campus library at Rockford College, Auburn High School, Summerdale, Johnson, Lathrop and Conklin schools, many residences, commercial and industrial buildings. More recent work of his firm, Hubbard, Hyland, Rasmussen & Smith includes Boylan Central Catholic High School, Belvidere and Guilford High Schools, Singer Mental Health Center, Rockford Memorial Hospital and several buildings on the new Rockford College campus. Hubbard retired in 1967. Major Hubbard is survived by a son, Thomas N., and two grandchildren, David and Mary, all of Aspen, Colo. Graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, in Greenwood Cemetery.
