Andrew Jackson Borden was born in 1854 in Port Clinton, Ottawa, Ohio, the son of Amelia Ann Napier and Great Lakes Capt. Alexander Borden. The following year his father lost his schooner, "Visitor," near West Sister Island in Lake Erie. The family moved in 1860 to Portage, Ohio, and six years later, Capt. Alexander gave up sailing the then perilous lakes.

Andrew's siblings were: Emaline A. Borden, who died at age 12; Margaretta Erepta Borden Luckey; Adelia "Delia" Ann Borden; Adaline "Addy" Borden Stanbery; Benjamin Alepanda Borden; Lillian "Lilla" Catherine Borden; Emma Borden Ritchie; and Douglas A. Borden.

Sometime between 1860 and 1870, Capt. Alexander moved his family to Elmore, Ohio, where Andrew spent most of his growing years. On Dec. 20, 1879, Andrew married Emma Lucinda Hall; they had 5 children: Zalia Gertrude Borden Adams, who died at age 21, just 9 months after her marriage; Ruth Elsa Borden Smith; Chauncey Landon Borden; Esther Marjorie Borden Kuehnle; and Esther's twin, Lester, who died within a few months of his birth.

On Nov. 6, 1915, Andrew was appointed Post Master of Rocky Ridge, Ohio. He spent his later years alternately visiting his sister Lillian Borden in Rocky Ridge and his daughter Esther Kuehnle in Toledo, Ohio. He died in Esther's home in 1932, and is buried in Forest Cemetery in Toledo.
