MY HUSBAND
Joseph (Joe) was the son of Sanford Lawson King and Mattie Lou Pittard King, born and raised in Madison County, Georgia.
He grew up working his father's farm and grist mill. At 17, he joined the CCC and was stationed in Nevada.
A veteran of WWII, he served in both the European and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters with the Army Infantry, and received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in Germany.
On June 28th, 1946, he married Helen Marie Wilson, in Athens, Clarke County, Ga. Joseph was the father of three children, Joseph King, Jr.(from a previous marriage) of Maryland, Bonnie Hartselle of Texas, and Beverly King of Georgia. There are 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Another grandchild, Stephen Joseph Vaughn, preceded him in death.
Though his formal education stopped at sixth-grade, he was a man of drive and determination. His natural instincts and self-teachings led him to a 32-year career with American Bakeries Company, moving up through the ranks to retire as Regional Engineer.
In the years before his eyesight and health failed, he enjoyed long hours with his woodworking, tinkering with cars and lawnmowers, and reading encyclopedias. He was a big country music fan and usually always kept it playing in the background, he also enjoyed good southern gospel music.
Joseph was of Baptist faith. He was a quiet man--a devoted husband, loyal friend and a loving father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Joseph passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at Vitas Innovative Hospice Care.
