Jasper was the third of six children born to Catherine Triggs and Edward Halferty. He married Elizabeth Myra Gathercole on 5 Apr 1893. They had thirteen children: John, Myrtle, Margaret, Verna, Matthew, Raymond, Dennis, Joseph, Glenn, David, Robert, Elizabeth and Donald.

In very early May of 1921, Jasper was kicked in the head by a horse. He remained in critical condition until his death in July.
