Megan Elizabeth Graham Harrell, 30, Marietta Resident "Cancer never kills love." I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. Following a valiant twelve-and-a-half year battle against an extremely rare form of cancer, Megan Elizabeth Graham Harrell passed from this life on April 24, 2009 with her husband and mother close by her side. We are heartbroken that our time with Megan was so brief, but we will cherish her in our hearts for eternity.

A much-beloved only child, Megan was born on January 15, 1979 in Atlanta. What a privilege it has been to be her parent, her son, and her husband! During all of life's challenges, Megan exemplified rare strength, courage, and quiet dignity, as well as an extraordinary sense of humor and love of life. In her own humble way, Megan became an inspiration to many others as she faced innumerable struggles and setbacks during the course of her illness.

In recent years, Megan inspired and encouraged numerous people in their valiant battles with cancer as she faced her own illness and grueling treatments and side effects of treatment with courage and determination. In addition to local metro Atlanta hospitals, Megan was known and loved at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Through the internet, she also reached out to inspire and encourage other patients with malignant thymoma and their families. Megan was also deeply concerned about the plight of others and - though she was limited physically in recent years - did everything she could to help those less fortunate. Though cancer had tried to defeat Megan on so many levels, she was not defined by her illness by those who knew her best.

A native Atlantan who lived most of her life in Marietta, Megan was a beloved wife, dedicated mother, and cherished daughter. With a passion and gift for fashion, interior decorating, travel and writing, Megan had been a student at Kennesaw State University. Over the years, she had traveled extensively to such places as London, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, the Caribbean, Mexico and Puerto Rico, but her favorite destination in all the world was Hawaii which she equated with heaven on earth. She was last able to visit with her husband and son in July 2007 and cherished the trip.

Megan also adored her home, handbags and Barbies, and loved horses, dogs, movies, anything related to Gone With the Wind, books, music, and theatre.

Megan is survived by her devoted husband, Sam Pierce Harrell, III as well as her much-loved son, Kevin Johnson Stevens, a seventh-grade student at Lovinggood Middle School in Cobb County. Megan is also survived by her cherished mom Mary Ann Johnson White, as well as stepdad Anthony White of Marietta, GA and her father and stepmother Camillus L'Engle Graham and Martha Graham, also of Marietta. She also leaves a number of other beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. She will be especially missed by Sugar, Shiloh and Lacy, her beloved canine companions, whom she had adopted into and made an important part of her family.

Megan was preceded in death by baby daughter Mary Catherine Harrell, as well as her dearly loved maternal grandparents Rhuel and Creswell Neary Johnson of Marietta. Megan's final wish was that her son Kevin, despite this loss, be all that he was meant to be as he grows into manhood, achieve his dreams, and know in his heart that nothing can ever extinguish her tremendous love for him. She has done everything in her power to provide him with a solid foundation and has every confidence that he will be her greatest legacy.

The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to WellStar Community Hospice, including Nurse Wendy Coward, Social Worker Carolyn Cobb and Volunteer Susanne Johnson Berns for their love, compassion and care. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to www.stopcancer.net. Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta, GA is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. A celebration of Megan's life will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Due West United Methodist Church with Dr. Tom Davis and Pastor Steven Brumbeloe officiating. Burial will follow in Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.
