Henry Humphrey was a 51 year old farmer and handyman and had been elected city marshall of Alma on May 1, 1933. His job was a lonely one, he would walk the streets of the deserted town and keep watch for petty thieves. On June 23, 1933 he was alerted of a robbery in nearby Fayetteville so he took with him Ansel "Red" Salyers and headed in that direction north of town. They came upon a wrecked car, driven by W.D. Jones and Buck Barrow. The lawmen stopped to investigate the wreck when they were greeted by gunfire. In the ensuing shootout Humphrey was hit in the chest. He was taken to St Johns Hospital in Fort Smith where he died from his wounds. He died preforming his duties.
