Catherine "Katie" Gavazzi, age 100, of Old Forge, died Saturday afternoon at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Born August 7, 1904 in Old Forge to the late Primo and Maria Morsini Gavazzi, she was educated in the Old Forge School District and was a lifelong resident of the borough. Before her retirement, Catherine was employed as a sales clerk by Kaplan's, and later, by Gladstein's Clothing, Old Forge. She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Old Forge. Catherine was a talented piano player, as well as a great gardener who enjoyed yard work of all sorts. She openly and graciously accepted the role of acting as the family matriarch at a time when such a benevolent type of act was not uncommon among many families. Her large family truly appreciated her guidance and watchful care over the span of her blessed lifetime. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Amelio, Henry, and Alfred Gavazzi; and two sisters, Rose Biscontini and Lena Gavazzi. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:00 AM from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, West Grace and Lawrence Streets, Old Forge. Entombment and committal rites, Cathedral Cemetery Mausoleum, Scranton. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 - 8 PM.
