Walterboro, March 2 - Colonel James H. Goethe, of Varnville, United States army, retired, died at the EsDorn hospital late this afternoon after a two weeks illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jerry Crews; two sons, James H. Goethe, Jr. (sic) and Peter Goethe, all of Varnville; two brothers, H. M. and A. T. Goethe of Jacksonville; a sister, Mrs. F. M. Moxson, Varnville.
Colonel Goethe was fifty-nine years old and was retired from the United States army several years ago. He was one of Hampton county's largest farmers.
