Enlisted as a private in Compan D, 26 United States Colored Infantry at Ramapo, NY, 6 Jan 1864. He was mustered out 28 August 1865. He was stationed at Rikers Island for most of his time in the Military. At the time of the Civil War the island was used for training as well as having several Army units stationed there.
