Dr. Bayles received his medical degree from Columbia, 1859. Dr. Bayles was first, an Asst. Surgeon then Surgeon of the 4th NY Heavy Artillery stationed at Fort Marcy in Arlington, VA. That was one of the dozens of forts protecting the ring around Washington, DC and Chain Bridge.

Back in civilian life he maintained a busy medical practice with one of his best know patients being Thomas A. Edison in Orange, NJ. He married Catherine Seguine (Johnson) Bayles on 20 May 1863.
